青年拜伦在一次舞会上邂逅了正在服丧的威尔莫·霍顿夫人，熠熠闪亮的小金箔点缀着她黑色的礼服，诗人的灵感顿时被她的美所激发，随即写出了这首流传至今的小诗。诗人用优美的笔法，栩栩如生地描绘出一位美丽动人的贤淑女子。诗人将明暗动静相结合，把美女誉为夜空，并用细腻的笔触勾勒出“她”秀外慧中的完美形象，真是“增一分则长，减一分则短”。
